Medication Policy

No medication or drugs of any type are to be carried by a student, kept in a locker, or elsewhere on school grounds. Any exception to this rule must be approved, documented in writing, and on file in the school clinic. Medication must be in a properly labeled container, with one medication per container, and must not be expired. According to Texas Education Code 38.013, a student with Diabetes, Asthma, or Anaphylaxis is entitled to possess and self- administer his/her prescription medication while on school property. All required paperwork must be completed and on file in the school clinic. Forms can be obtained by the school nurse or downloaded from the link below and must be renewed annually. Students who are found to be in possession of any medication without proper authorization may be subject to disciplinary action as written in the KISD Discipline Management Plan and Student Code of Conduct.

Health and Nutrition

Please encourage your child to start each day with a healthy breakfast and bring a water bottle to school to drink water throughout the day. The clinic does not have snacks. The cafeteria serves breakfast and lunch and sells a la carte items for the students. Please partner with us in helping your child make good decisions so they can thrive in the classroom both physically and mentally.

A Note from the Nurse

As the school nurse I will provide a temporary care facility for children who become ill or injured at school. Although we will not call parents for every visit made to the clinic, there may be times I will need to contact you. In order for this to be possible, please keep your phone numbers and records up to date. If your child has a major medical problem, please stop by or give me a call to make sure I am aware of it.

New Guidelines for food being brought into the Classrooms

We ask that items be store bought, not homemade and left in the original package.
Please provide a label with a list of all the ingredients and nutritional facts with the food items.
Please send individual-sized treats (cupcakes, cookies, or doughnuts) that can be served and consumed during a short period of time.
Treats brought to school should be peanut/nut free.
Please notify the teacher in advance to make sure no one else is bringing something in that day. We try to prevent multiple treats on the same day.

Health Services

24 Hour Rule

Students who demonstrate signs and symptoms of illness or a possible communicable disease should be referred to the school clinic for further assessment. Those with an elevated temperature of 100 degrees or above or those who vomit or have diarrhea must be isolated and sent home. The student must be fever free without fever-reducing medication for 24 hours before he/she can be allowed back to school. Those excluded due to vomiting or diarrhea must also be free of symptoms without the use of preventative medications before being allowed back to school. (Administrative Regulation FFAD)

Immunization Requirements

Katy ISD follows the Texas Department of State Health Services recommendation for immunization compliance in order for a student to attend school. The law requires that all students be as up-to-date as medically feasible in order to attend classes. The immunization vaccine requirements for each grade level are listed on the Katy ISD website. Exemptions to the immunization requirements are allowable on an individual basis for medical contraindications, reasons of conscience-including religious belief, and active duty with the armed forces of the United States. Medication Administration

Short term ( 15 days or less) and long term (15 days or more) medications are sometimes prescribed for students to be given during the school day. In such cases, regulations governing administration of medication during school hours must be strictly adhered to by school personnel. Any natural and/or homeopathic products, not FDA approved, will not be dispensed by school personnel.
